Les dernières deux décennies ont été témoin d’une transformation rapide des médias traditionnels vers les nouveaux médias, qui englobent les technologies de l’information et de la communication numériques, informatisées et en réseaux. Ce changement a soulevé des soucis et des discussions entourant les implications positives et négatives des nouveaux médias, ainsi que d’autres enjeux tels que: le contrôle de l’information, la quantité et la rapidité de la communication, la sphère publique démocratique Habermasienne et l’influence mondiale des conglomérats de média. La recherche théorique de Marshall McLuhan sur les technologies de la communication a enrichi la compréhension historique du changement social. D’après lui, le moyen dominant à un temps précis façonne, de façons relatives, la manière dont nous percevons et comprenons le monde qui nous entoure. Par conséquent, nous ne pouvons pas comprendre une expérience technologique sans étudier son contexte social.
