Abstract
Alexithymia is a matter of concern, especially in young university students, who may suffer from this disorder that leads to various emotional, social, and even family problems due to the limited expression of their feelings and emotions. The interest in understanding the importance of early detection of this disorder has led to the development of the present study, the objective of which was to determine whether alexithymia is present in fourth cycle students of the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Cuenca. To carry out this study, a quantitative approach was used with the application of the Toronto Alexthymia Scale instrument applied to 56 people, both women (35 participants) and men (21 participants). Based on the responses, data analysis was carried out according to the dimensions of the instrument applied, which showed that the students who were part of the sample presented high rates of alexithymia, with the factor with the greatest predisposition being externally oriented thinking. Finally, it was found that those who presented a higher incidence were men compared to women.
