Abstract
The\nsynthesis and host–guest chemistry of pillararene (PA) derivatives\nare a hot research topic, and the applications of PAs in relevant\nresearch fields are essential to explore. Carboxylate-substituted\npillar[6]arene (CPA[6])-valved mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs)\nfunctionalized with dimethylbenzimidazolium (DMBI) and bipyridinium\n(BP) stalks were constructed, respectively, for multiresponsive controlled\nrelease. CPA[6] encircled the DMBI or BP stalks to develop supramolecular\nnanovalves for encapsulation of cargo within the MSN pores. The release\nof cargo was triggered by acidic pH or competitive binding for the\ndethreading of CPA[6] and the opening of the nanovalves; moreover,\ncoordination chemistry is the first strategy to activate CPA nanovalves\nby metal chelating with the carboxylate groups of CPA for cargo release.\nThe controlled release of the CPA[6]-valved MSN delivery systems can\nmeet diverse requirements and has promising biological applications\nin targeted drug therapy.
