Während andere dem Neuen Jahr entgegen schauten, blickt die indonesische Zeitschrift Kompas noch mal auf die indonesische Außenpolitik des letzten Jahres zurück. Dabei kam unter anderem zur Sprache, daß Außenminister Ali Alatas sich im Februar 1994 von einer Parlamentarischen Kommission auffor- dem lassen mußte, in Sachen Osttimor doch bitte eine offensivere Politik zu verfolgen. Ali Alatas antwortete damals frustriert: "... die Arbeit des Außenministeriums beginnt und endet an der Tatsache, daß die Vereinten Nationen den Anschluß Osttimors an Indonesien nicht anerkennen."1 Präsident Suharto, seine Technokraten und Generäle drängt es nach internationaler Beachtung.
