Abstract
Importance: HighAs you may be aware from news reports, there has been an outbreak of a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) that appears to have originated in South East Asia-Hong Kong, mainland China (Guangdong Province), Singapore, and Vietnam ' s city of Hanoi.No cases of SARS have been reported on Vancouver Island, but Malaspina University-College is aware of the international issue of SARS and is monitoring the situation and taking steps to keep all students and employees informed.In Canada, the cases appear to be concentrated in the Toronto area.Prompt action on the part of Vancouver hospital staff in following precautionary protocols appears to have limited the spread of the disease in British Columbia.B.C. health officials have activated emergency preparedness measures and have established emergency operation centres in case they need to isolate people with suspect or probable cases of SARS.In addition, Vancouver Airport is screening all travelers from Asia. What is Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)According to Health Canada, SARS is a severe form of pneumonia that is accompanied by fever.
