Abstract
Halictus (Odontalisctus) ligatus Say sensu lato GD: Bahamas, Canada, Central America south to Colombia, Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, and United States (Moure and Hurd 1987). This species was previously regarded as the most widespread halictine species in the New World, however recent electrophoretic and molecular analyses have shown that two species are involved (Carman and Packer 1997; Danforth et al., 1998). The Caribbean species is Halictus poeyi Lepeletier (Carman and Packer 1997; Genaro 2007; L. Packer and J. A. Genaro, unpublished data). Ashmead (1900) recorded H. ligatus as occurring in Puerto Rico, under the synonym H. poeyi Lepeletier. However, Wolcott (1948) expressed the view that H. poeyi as listed by Ashmead is actuality one of the Lasioglossum (Dialictus) species listed above. In absence of evidence to the contrary, we accept Wolcott’s conclusions.
