Abstract
As part of the faculty requirements for a new internal toilet and kitchen facilities at St Marys's Church, Walkern, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring. The present groundworks, which consisted of a single drainage run to connect a new internal toilet to the existing drain on Church End, resulted in an extremely long excavation around three sides of the church within the churchyard. The extent of this excavation and the depth to which the new drain had to be placed meant that human remains were inevitably encountered. While a large quantity of disarticulated human bone was revealed as would be expected within a graveyard, a total of 10 articulated skeletons were also identified, some of which were clearly in defined graves. An assessment of the articulated human remains demonstrated a mixture of sexes and ages. While the sample size was small due to the nature of the excavation and archaeological constraints meant no full skeleton could be excavated, the assemblage demonstrated nothing that would not be expected within a standard village church cemetery
