Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

An initial site visit to The Bowdon Hotel was undertaken on 1st June 2023 to carry out a programme of historic building investigation in line with Historic England Level 2/3 standards, focused on the nineteenth century elements of the complex. A further watching brief visit conducted on the 25th August following the soft strip of much of modern internal fabric. The historic building investigation was focused on the nineteenth century elements of the Bowdon Hotel (Plate 10). These comprised the two semi-detached Victorian villas at the north end of the Site encompassing four storeys including a lower ground level and converted attic. Similarly, on the south side of the modern link block the original Bowdon Hydro, also known as Malvern House, was also spread over four floors, with a lower ground level open to the Marlborough Road to the west, and an attic floors. In addition, two late nineteenth century extensions, placed in a L shape butted the rear of Malvern House, which had subsequently been remodelled and added to in the twentieth century. A late twentieth century hotel wing extension butted the north side of the Hydro alongside a pool and gym complex (both not included in the investigation). The buildings were surrounded by tarmacked carparking to the west, south and east and bounded by a combination of hedges and low stone walls. The Bowden Hotel complex was orientated north,north-east/ south,south-west, however, for clarity the directions within this report are referred to by the nearest cardinal points, with the principal elevation facing west. Internally areas were also ascribed room numbers to assist the description. These were based on building and floor eg HLG01 signifies a room with the Hydro Lower Ground whilst VF01 signifies a room within the Villa first floor. The historical building investigation of The Bowdon Hotel has provided a valuable opportunity to record a hydropathic establishment and a pair of villas dating from the late-nineteenth century and chart their development. It has also enabled a review of the available documentary material to be combined with the physical evidence embedded in the historic fabric to produce a detailed narrative of the building's development. The conclusion drawn by the archaeological building investigation is that due to the modern interventions most of the historical features had been removed, but those original features that survived have been recorded by the historical building investigation and provided some insight into the original function of the Bowdon Hydro.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
