Abstract
In response to a planning application for a new mixed commercial and residential development on land to the rear of 93 - 98 Bancroft, Hitchin, Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Eave Projects Ltd to carry out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording of the groundworks. Ground reduction across the site revealed a number of archaeological features. A possible pit, or butt-ended ditch, was recorded on the northern boundary. a further three pits and three postholes were located to the east and south of the feature. By far the most significant discovery was the remains of a medieval pottery kiln and associated fire pits, which had been cut by a number of later features including a post-medieval brick-lined well. A significant quantity of pottery was recovered from the kiln and has been dated to the 12th - 14th centuries. It appears to consist largely of Hertfordshire Grey Ware wasters. These were used to backfill the kiln after it went out of use.
