Abstract
Building recording was carried out between the 18th May and 6th April 2017 and included the following elements. Establishing an accurate archaeological record of the buildings to Historic England Level 2. An overall photographic survey of the exterior and interior of the buildings in their present condition comprising general and detailed shots. Photography was carried out using a Panasonic DMC FZ72. The images are in RAW with high quality JPEG duplicates. Where possible and appropriate were included in the photographs. Written notes on the buildings' construction, present and former use and, where appropriate, the buildings' past and present relationship to their setting in the wider landscape. Production of sketch plans in the absence of architectural or survey drawings. Recording was restricted by the presence of hazardous debris around and within the structure and due to safety concerns the pillbox was not entered. The pillbox was a typical structure of its type and was intended to provide a hardened fighting position for infantry in the eventuality of an invasion. The structure was found to be in a generally good condition with no obvious spalling or cracking of the concrete. The pillbox was a six-sided structure, approximately 4m x 4m, with a wide, flat entrance elevation at the south-west, and a tapered frontage facing towards the road. The structure was simple in its construction and the walls and roof were formed of precast reinforced concrete slabs. The current scheme of road improvement works is not envisaged to impact upon the pillbox and at time of this survey the pillbox is intended to remain in situ.
