Le Réseau international francophone de recherche en éducation et formation est né en 1989. Il organise tous les deux ans dans l'un des quatre pays fondateurs (France, Belgique, Québec, Suisse) des rencontres entre chercheurs et chercheuses en éducation. Ces rencontres prennent la forme de symposiums parallèles sur différents thèmes de recherche en éducation, thèmes reliés par un fil rouge. A l'occasion des 30 ans du Rencontres internationales du REF, l'unité Mixte de Recherche « Education, Formation, Travail, Savoirs » (UMR EFTS) s'est vue confier l'organisation des rencontres en 2019.
