Au cours des soixante dernières années, l’enseignement supérieur a connu, au gré de multiples réformes souvent majeures, une profonde métamorphose sur plusieurs plans. L’enseignement supérieur, entendu au sens large et incluant l’ensemble des études et pratiques éducatives dites « post-secondaires » au Québec et « post-bac » en France, est devenu plus présent dans la vie quotidienne d’un nombre croissant de personnes, jeunes et moins jeunes, qui fréquentent les différents établissements scolaires qui le composent. Le passage par ses murs est devenu une norme et une nécessité pour l’accès à nombre de professions. L’organisation même du champ a connu de nombreuses modifications. Dans certaines sociétés, cela s’est traduit par une diversification des établissements, comme en France où la part relative des étudiant∙es inscrit∙es à l’université s’est réduite depuis une trentaine d’années. Partout, l’université a connu elle-même des changements institutionnels, organisationnels et intellectuels.
