Abstract
Mientras las ficciones fundacionales hispanoamericanas del siglo XIX han sido analizadas por sus representaciones de las relaciones entre los amantes que forman gran parte de la trama de estas novelas, lafigura del padre no ha recibido el mismo nivel de atencion critica, en gran parte por su ausencia de las mismas narrativas. Este articulo explora la cuestion del fracaso patriarcal en las novelas decimononicas con un enfasis particular en Aves sin nido y Herencia, de la escritora peruana Clorinda Matto de Turner. Mientras en la primera novela hay varios ejemplos de padres eficacesy carinosos, ya en la segunda tales ejemplos han desaparecido y el acento de la novela recae en la influencia genetica de la madre. Matto de Turner emplea el discurso cientifico comun en el naturalismo para crear una vision determinista de la herencia genetica, pero su deseo de ofrecer soluciones a los problemas familiares y nacionales vicia esta misma vision cien tifica y determinista, y crea contradicciones irresolubles en la novela. Atribuimos estas contradicciones a las circunstancias politicas y personates bajo las cuales Matto de Turner escribio Herencia.
