Tracking Justice: The Constitution Express to Shared Sovereignty

Abstract
The Union of BC Indian Chiefs (UBCIC) is awakening to the news around the patriation of the Constitution. Grand Chief George Manuel, President of UBCIC and the World Council of Indigenous Peoples have summoned UBCIC’s legal department to develop a response to Canada's draconian strategy to eliminate the Indigenous Peoples’ voice from patriation politics. This article looks back at this process from the perspective of one of UBCIC's lawyers, from the grassroots development of the Constitution Express to Ottawa to the legal cases launched in the British Courts. Further, it considers the impacts of the constitutional entrenchment of Indigenous rights today against the aims of the Constitution Express, the resurgence of Indigenous Peoples' legal orders, and the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
