eMpower - Recommendations for exercise by Midwives during and after pregnancy

Abstract
Pregnancy is a sensitive period for the health of mother and child in the short, medium and long term, which is reflected in the increasing prevalence of pregnancy-associated diseases such as obesity, gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, macrosomia, maternal thrombosis and depression. Exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle reduces the risk of these conditions and also supports physiological pregnancy during the course and after birth (high-risk pregnancies excluded). With the academisation of midwifery education in the context of the reform of the midwifery law in Germany, the requirement for the quality of midwives' counselling on health topics such as exercise during and after pregnancy is also increasing. In the German-speaking countries, however, for physical activity no official guideline is available as support for counselling pregnant women and women after childbirth. The aim in the first step is therefore to characterise the quality of counselling provided by midwives in practice on the topic of "exercise during and after pregnancy". In the project "eMpower", an online-based questionnaire (survey tool: Unipark) is planned. The original questions are taken from the "Clinician Prenatal and Postpartum Exercise Questionnaire" by the Canadian professor Margie Davenport (consent for use obtained). The questionnaire will be translated and adapted to German conditions. With the help of the questionnaire, the current state of knowledge and the way in which midwives provide advice on physical activity during and after pregnancy will be evaluated. Thus, the questionnaire provides an important basis for the development of tools and guidelines for physical activity that midwives can use for counselling in future. In addition, the questionnaire can be used to identify approaches for the preparation of profession-specific further training formats and implementations in academic training.
