Abstract

Op de Mookerheide, ten zuiden van Nijmegen, ligt een raadselachtige rechthoekige structuur met dubbele greppel. Deze structuur, ontdekt via Google Earth in 2007, bevindt zich op een van de hoogste punten van de Mookerheide en is zichtbaar op het Actueel Hoogtebestand Nederland (AHN2). Een werkgroep van AWN-afdeling Nijmegen onderzocht de structuur, aanvankelijk gedacht als een Romeinse wachttoren. Luchtfoto's uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog toonden aan dat de structuur toen al bestond, maar de exacte functie blijft onduidelijk. Recente veldonderzoeken en archiefonderzoeken leverden geen definitieve antwoorden op, hoewel een civiele toepassing mogelijk is. De structuur blijft een mysterie.
