Abstract
De Prins Willem Alexandersluis betreft een uitbreiding van het in 1870 gereed gekomen complex van de Oranjesluizen. Deze waren onderdeel van de aanleg van het Noordzeekanaal. De in 1995 gebouwde Prins Willem Alexandersluis bevindt zich ten oosten van het centrum en vormt de scheiding tussen het (afgesloten) IJ en het Buiten-IJ. Het complex sluit aan de zuidzijde aan op de noordwesthoek van het Zeeburgereiland (Zuider IJdijk) en aan de noordzijde op de noordelijke IJ-oever bij Schellingwoude (Schellingwouderdijk).
