Abstract
Global initiatives for managing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) now focus on promoting individualised, supportive, family-centred care. Unnecessary separation of mother and baby and pharmacological interventions are minimised in models such as ‘Eat, Sleep, Console’ in the United States and Families in Recovery (FIR) Program in Canada, reducing length of stay and healthcare costs. The alignment of Australia’s management of NAS with this evidence and global trends is unknown. Using comparative analysis, Australian evidence and guidelines will be assessed against current best available evidence.
