Systematic Review of Trauma-related Mental Health Symptoms in Public Service Personnel: Prevalence, Prevention/Intervention & Work Outcomes

Abstract
Public service personnel (PSP), including emergency responders, corrections, and transportation workers, among others, experience potentially traumatic events (PTEs) as an inherent occupational hazard. A wealth of research examines the impact of workplace PTE in relation to trauma-related mental health symptoms in PSP but the literature to date is highly heterogeneous with respect to estimates of prevalence and the efficacy of prevention and intervention initiatives. Indeed, little consensus exists even regarding whether workplace PTE and potentially associated mental health symptoms negatively impact work performance. The present systematic review initiative synthesizes international data published in any language using best-evidence narrative synthesis and, where possible, quantitative meta-regression to explore prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety in PSP as well as work outcomes and efficacy of prevention and intervention strategies.
