The R/V METEOR M 66 cruise was carried out primarily in support of the "SFB" 574 (Volatiles \nand Fluids in Subduction Zones), a Cooperative Research Center dedicated to understanding the \nbudget, reactions, and recycling of volatile elements in subduction zones and their role in climate \nforcing. To address the short- and long-term variability of the Earth’s climate, the geochemical \nevolution of the hydrosphere and atmosphere, and related processes that are all connected to the \nreturn flow of volatiles and fluids from subduction zones, the SFB 574 is studying the Central \nAmerican forearc off Costa Rica and Nicaragua (Fig 1). \nThe goals of the initial, oceanographic leg of cruise M 66 were to obtain part of a 2-year time \nseries of the transport of southern hemispheric water through the passages into the Caribean, to \nstudy the circulation and variability of the flow in the deep western boundary current and in the \ninterior of the basin, and to calculate time scales of deep water spreading from the Labrador Sea \nto 16°N.
