Background and objective: Stroke educational materials are widely used for health promotion and disseminating information. There are multiple posters about stroke; however most revolve around the theme of educating the consumer on identifying stroke symptoms and risk factors. A comprehensive educational display of stroke, its consequences, and acute and rehabilitation treatments was not found in the literature or online. The objective was to produce patient educational materials for stroke rehabilitation patients to be used in a hospital, clinic or therapy settings via an educational poster and a complementary patient information sheet. Multiple healthcare professionals require these tools to enhance patient compliance and self-management.Methods: In collaboration with Algonquin College Applied Research and Innovation a graphic design student and professor were engaged as part of a grant. The internet and databases concerning educational stroke materials were surveyed. Criteria included definition of stroke, risk factors, neuroanatomy and treatment.Results: An innovative and user-friendly poster and patient information sheet have been created for stroke patients and their families, physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, nurses, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers and other healthcare professionals. Preliminary usage indicates that the tools encourage collaboration between therapists and patients, and promote compliance and self-management. The primary author noted engagement of both patients and their caregivers. Stroke educational materials appear to promote self-care practices and risk factor management that may improve quality of life.Conclusion: Preliminary trials of using the poster at stroke rehabilitation in-patient and out-patient units at Bruyu00e8re Continuing Care have commenced. Goals of stoke educational materials are to enable patients to effectively self-manage their symptoms. Quality of life maybe enhanced. World Stroke Congress participants are encouraged to provide comments on the poster and patient information sheet.
