Plus de 300 modifications techniques ont été apportées à cette nouvelle édition. Le CNPI renferme les dispositions techniques concernant: les activités liées à la construction, à l'utilisation ou à la démolition de bâtiments et d'installations; l'état d'éléments particuliers de bâtiments et d'installations; la conception ou la construction d'éléments particuliers d'installations relativement à certains risques; et les mesures de protection liées à l'utilisation actuelle ou prévue des bâtiments. De nouveaux renseignements ont été ajoutés à la version de 2005 du CNPI afin de rendre celui-ci plus clair, plus facile à adapter aux bâtiments ou installations existants et plus souple relativement aux percées technologiques. Ils expliquent les objectifs que les dispositions du CNPI visent à atteindre et décrivent les fonctions qu'un bâtiment ou une installation doivent remplir afin de respecter les objectifs. La présentation du CNPI a été modifiée et comprend maintenant trois divisions, soit les divisions A, B et C. La division A comprend les options de conformité, les objectifs et les énoncés fonctionnels. La division B contient les exigences, maintenant appelées « solutions acceptables », concernant divers sujets tels la protection des bâtiments et des occupants contre l'incendie, le stockage à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur, les liquides inflammables ou combustibles, les procédés et opérations dangereux, le matériel de protection contre l'incendie et les installations de sécurité incendie dans les bâtiments de grande hauteur. La division C contient les dispositions administratives. Le CNPI 2005 complète le Code national du bâtiment – Canada 2005. Il importe de tenir compte des deux publications lors des travaux de construction, de rénovation et d'entretien des bâtiments.
