Abstract
La psicolingüística es el estudio de los mecanismos cognitivos que sustentan el uso del lenguaje humano. Según Carroll (2008), este campo se ha ocupado de al menos dos cuestiones clave. La primera se refiere a qué competencias lingüísticas se requieren para utilizar un sistema lingüístico con eficacia. Aunque la competencia lingüística se refiere al “conocimiento” de una lengua, el dominio de una lengua y sus matices concretos no siempre forma parte de nuestro conocimiento consciente y explícito. La segunda cuestión se refiere a los procesos cognitivos que intervienen en el uso cotidiano de la lengua. Noam Chomsky plantea una dicotomía entre competencia y actuación, donde el uso cotidiano de la lengua, la actuación, remite a actividades comunicativas habituales, como leer un libro, mantener una conversación y comprender la lengua que nos rodea. Con procesos cognitivos se alude a los procedimientos mentales fundamentales para usar el lenguaje, como la percepción, el pensamiento, la actualización y la memoria, entre otros.
