This project comprises a heritage assessment and walk-over survey of a site located immediately to the east of Green Gate Lane, Long Preston, in North Yorkshire. It was undertaken to support a planning application for the development of the proposal site for residential purposes. The aim of this project has been to research the historical and archaeological development of the proposal site and immediate surrounding area to identify any surviving features of archaeological significance in the form of designated, or undesignated heritage assets. This heritage assessment has established that the proposal site is located within an area containing few recorded remains of Prehistoric or Roman date. The village of Long Preston is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was associated with a church. The present village is located near a bridging point of the Long Preston Beck. A bridge crossing had been established by the mid-19th century. With respect to the archaeological potential of the proposal site, there is little evidence for Prehistoric to early Medieval activity either within the proposal site or the wider area. During the Medieval period, the proposal site appears to have formed part of the open field system of the village of Long Preston.
