En France, le Freestyle Libre est proposé aux personnes vivant avec un diabète sous condition de suivi d’une éducation spécifique. Cette recherche vise à décrire et comprendre le phénomène d’appropriation de ce glucomètre connecté. Aussi, une évaluation réaliste a été menée avec la construction de 114 chaînes de contexte-mécanismes et effets qui éclairent sur l’acceptation de cette technologie, sur les conditions et modalités d’utilisation et sur les effets produits grâce à celle-ci. Cette étude montre que l’appropriation requiert un engagement, qu’il existe de nombreuses variations de l’opérationnalisation de ce processus et qu’il peut conduire à développer des apprentissages et gagner en compétence en autogestion. La thèse situe aussi que l’éducation est nécessaire pour tirer davantage parti de la technologie mais aussi que l’amélioration des programmes dans l’avenir est souhaitable pour soutenir les personnes qui le nécessitent ou le souhaitent le plus.
