Abstract

Cocksfoot mottle virus (CfMV) has a fairly narrow host plant range and has so far only caused severe losses in Dactylis glomerata production fields. However, recent findings indicate numerous cases of plant infections in wheat fields in Ohio, USA, which may indicate the threat of CfMV to crops of this species as well. In addition, the virus can also infect other economically important cereal species: barley, rye and oats. So far, the presence of CfMV has been found in Europe (Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, France, Germany, Russia), in Asia (Japan), as well as in North America (Canada and the United States) and New Zealand. In Poland, the virus was first detected on D. glomerata plants in Silesia Province in 2016. The natural way for the virus to spread is through transmission by vectors of the horsetails Oulema melanopa and O. lichensis, which are abundant throughout Poland. However, the presence of vectors is not necessary, as CfMV is easily transmitted mechanically with the sap of infected plants through injuries to the plants caused during agrotechnical operations such as mowing, often causing the virus to spread unknowingly in as well as between crops, especially when there are no visible symptoms of the disease. Evidence of this is the successive spread of CfMV in New Zealand, where the virus vectors are not present. Plant protection against viruses involves systematic inspection of plant material, in this case mainly D. glomerata, and eradication of infected plants and the insect vectors living on them. In addition, in order to prevent the spread of the virus from all possible sources of infection, it is very important to maintain hygiene during phytosanitary procedures and care by washing and disinfecting machinery and tools.
