12 Royston Road, Baldock, Hertfordshire: Archaeological Evaluation Report

Abstract
In order to characterise the archaeological potential of the site of a proposed new development on land located at 12 Royston Road, Baldock, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Wheatley Homes Ltd. to undertake an archaeological field evaluation. This work was carried out to provide further information to the local planning authority regarding the impact of the proposals on the historic environment before determination of the planning application for the development. The site lies within Area of Archaeological Significance 96, which encompasses both the medieval town and the earlier Iron Age and Romano-British settlement. The archaeological evaluation revealed a small number of features, comprising three pits and one linear ditch, all dating to the period between the late 1st century BC - mid 1st century AD. Finds recovered from these features, particularly from the western side of the site, indicate domestic occupation in the immediate vicinity. On the basis of the results of the evaluation, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological remains may be considered to be High for the late Iron Age, Roman and modern periods and Low for all other periods.
