Première école francophone de bibliothéconomie en Amérique du Nord, l’École de Bibliothécaires a délivré, durant son existence, plus de 700 diplômes dont 134 baccalauréats en bibliothéconomie. L’article décrit les difficultés rencontrées par les principaux intervenants de cette École. Se basant sur les documents d’époque, il analyse également les objectifs poursuivis par l’École de même que les cours qui y ont été donnés. À partir de ce discours, les auteurs tentent de dégager les principales visions du bibliothécaire et de la bibliothèque qui ont été véhiculées. En conclusion, ils saluent la contribution importante des différents promoteurs de cette École, dont le combat sans répit a permis à la profession de se développer au Québec.
