Abstract
The development of Canadian diplomatic status represents an interesting study in the growth of a Dominion from colony to independent nation, and in the transformation of the British Empire to the British Commonwealth of Nations. Canada, largest and oldest of the Dominions, took the lead in demanding greater Dominion independence, and her geographical location as a close neighbor of the United States provided the ideal conditions for an attempt at independent diplomacy. I have tried, first of all, to present a brief survey of attempts at reforming the Imperial system of diplomatic representation, together with a discussion of the Dominions' problem of reconciling Imperial ties with legitimate national aspirations. Secondly, I have attempted to show the conflict of nationalistic and imperialistic interests within Canada itself, and have concluded with a discussion of factors inhibiting and delaying the creation of an independent diplomatic establishment for Canada in Washington, D.C.
