Update of the inputs and estimation method for the maturity ogives of Atlantic Cod in the Northern Gulf of St. Lawrence (3Pn, 4RS) over the 1983-2023 period
Bibliographic record
Abstract
The maturity status of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence has been assessed by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) for over 40 years. However, to our knowledge, neither the data inputs nor the methods for estimating proportions mature at length (PML) or at age (PMA) have been revised exhaustively for this stock. In this report, we present an update of the scientific surveys available to this end, and of the equations used for calculations by sex and year over the 1983-2023 period. The revised values for PML and PMA were relatively coherent between surveys, despite key differences in the type of sampling (random-stratified or systematic) and the season (winter, spring or summer). It is therefore established that, provided that sufficient sample sizes are available, the survey conducted in the month of August could well replace that on cod reproductive potential in the spring as the main data source for the estimation of PML and PMA in the coming years. We conclude that the maturity indices for this stock are quite robust to the season and sampling type, but that the degree of coherence between the various surveys may largely depend on the quantity and quality of sampling.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
