Abstract
The name SWIM stands for Shallow Water Instructional Model. This code solves the linearized shallow water equations on the beta plane. It is configured to reproduce the fondamental theory of Stommel (1948) about the westward intensification of the wind-driven ocean circulation. It is the most basic model of ocean currents such as the Gulf Stream. This code was written principally as a pedagogical tool to learn about the basics of numerical modelling in physical oceanography and to learn about the fondamental concept of "westward intensification".
