Venantius Fortunatus, Poems 5.11 (Ad eundem [= Gregorium episcopum] de itinere suo, 'To the same person, on his journey'), 5-8 The poem describes a winter journey that Fortunatus undertook from Tours to Poitiers. Nuper ab aspectu decedens concite vestro 5 per glaciem vitreas me loquor isse vias. sed crucis auxilio, Martino operante patrono, perveni ad matres salvus, opime pater. 'When recently I departed hastily from your presence, I can tell you that I traveled on roads glassy with ice, but by the aid of the cross and the efficacy of Martin, my patron, I came home safely to my mothers, noble father.'
