Abstract
El primer convento femenino instalado en la ciudad de Teruel fue el de las monjas clarisas, denominada de Santa Catalina, que han permanecido en la ciudad desde el siglo XIV hasta el año 2018. Es una fundación real que se debe al empeño de Leonor de Sicilia. (1349-1375) y de su esposo, Pedro IV el Ceremonioso (1336-1387). Esta monarca favoreció a Teruel, entre otros aspectos, con la concesión del título de ciudad en 1347, la implantación del convento de clarisas y el intento fallido de conseguir una sede episcopal para la capital. La razón del buen trato dispensado por este rey se encuentra en el apoyo que la ciudad le brindó durante la lucha contra la Unión de los nobles aragoneses. El objetivo del presente trabajo es, a partir de lo conocido hasta ahora y de nuevas aportaciones documentales procedentes de los fondos del Archivo Histórico Provincial y del Archivo Diocesano de Teruel, trazar la trayectoria del convento a lo largo de su dilatada historia.
