In response to the requirements of a diocesan faculty, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Michael Dales Partnership, acting on behalf of the St. Katherine's Church PCC, to implement a programme of archaeological investigation to be carried out as prior to the erection of an extension to St. Katherine's Church, Arlesey Road, Ickleford, Hertfordshire. The study area lies within Archaeological Area 86 (AA86) on the draft North Hertfordshire District Local Plan. This encompasses the medieval core of the village around St Katherine's Church and Upper Green. The parish church of St Katherine (HER 4306) was originally founded in the mid 12th century, with later additions to the building in the 13th, 15th and 19th centuries. No significant archaeological features or deposits were revealed during the evaluation of the site by trial trenching. A layer a limestone debris revealed above the subsoil (002) was probably a scatter of waste material from the 19th century renovation of the church. On the basis of these results, the risk that the development might disturb significant archaeological remains is considered to be Low for all periods.
