ASSESSMENT OF THE ARCHAEOLOGY AND HISTORY OF THE CLOISTERS OF EXETER CATHEDRAL

Abstract
Comprehensive desk based assessment and archaeological survey of the cloisters including hand drawn survey and analysis. This report presents the results of an archaeological assessment carried out within the area of the medieval cloisters adjoining the cathedral. Archaeological deposits dating from Roman, medieval and early modern times are preserved below ground, while the standing buildings consist of a variety of structures of widely varying dates. These include parts of the cathedral, dating from the 12th to the 14th centuries, the 13th-century Chapter House, a 17th-century Serge Market and 18th and 19th-century buildings including both canonical and lay residences. The complex also includes a late 19th-century reconstruction of part of the medieval cloisters by J.L.Pearson, incorporating a first-floor library. The post-medieval buildings all incorporate fabric retained from the medieval cloisters, which were largely demolished in the 1650s. The value of the evidence preserved from late medieval and early modern times is greatly enhanced by the survival of an extensive collection of historical documents, including deeds and public expenditure records, relating to these structures. Archaeological recording entailed the production of a drawn record of the standing buildings, consisting of selected elevations and sections drawn by hand-measurement, in outline, at a scale of 1:50. A photographic record was also produced and digitised plans of the entire cloister garth, south and north walks of the cloisters, were created and annotated to show the location of historic fixtures and fittings and the extent of the survival of the medieval cloister. The surviving evidence informed reconstruction drawings showing the probable form of the medieval cloisters and of the 17th-century Serge Market. A wide variety of documentary sources were consulted, including material from the archives of the Dean and Chapter and of the City Chamber, the medieval fabric rolls, the act books of the Dean and Chapter and the City Chamber, and the City Receiver's accounts. Other sources included historic maps and illustrations, lease plans and records of previous archaeological work within the area. A summary history of the cloister area outlines the principal medieval and post-medieval developments, and assists with the interpretation of the standing buildings and the buried remains. A search was made both locally and at the RIBA Library in London for material relating to the 19th-century reconstruction of the cloisters. The architects' plans for the proposed reconstructions of Pearson and Harbottle Reed were unavailable at the time of the assessment, but are held by the Cathedral Surveyor.
