Abstract
The trenches were located by triangulation from known points and opened using a wheeled JCB fitted with a toothless ditching bucket. Machining spoil was inspected and scanned for archaeological artefacts. Trenches were machined to either the natural geological or first significant archaeological horizon as appropriate. Trenches were cleaned by hand and all potential archaeological features and deposits were identified and sampled. All identified contexts were photographed, recorded and drawn using the appropriate proforma. The site lies within Area of Archaeological Significance 96, which encompasses both the medieval town and the earlier Iron Age and Romano-British settlement. The archaeological evaluation revealed that the ground at the site had been significantly disturbed during the modern era, most likely in connection with the construction of the railway embankment to the north of the site and the industrial units on the site itself. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were uncovered during the fieldwork.
