Nappers House, West Walks, Dorchester, Dorset: Archaeological Field Evaluation, August 2019
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation in the garden of Nappers House, West Walks, Dorchester, Dorset, as part of scoping works associated with potential development of additional almshouses. A single machine-cut trench was excavated within the area of the garden. However, the original proposed length of the trench was reduced (with the agreement of Dorset Council's Senior Archaeologist) after it became clear that archaeological remains could not safely be investigated at depth, and that further mechanical removal of in situ archaeological remains was therefore not justified. Truncated natural chalk bedrock was found sloping downward from west to east, at depths ranging from 2.8m to 3.2m below modern ground level. Above this, Roman soil layers and part of two possible Roman cut features were identified at 2.4m below modern ground level. These deposits could not be investigated manually, but finds recovered from them included Roman coarseware pottery and Roman ceramic roof tile. Above the Roman levels, a 1.2m thickness of homogenous dark soil attests prolonged medieval and post-medieval agriculture and horticulture within the south west quarter of the historic town. In the southern part of the trench, the base of what may have been a later 19th century pathway was cut into the top of the agricultural soil. Both units were sealed beneath a 1m thick layer of redeposited soil laid down as part of the landscaping associated with the construction of Nappers House in 1957.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
