Abstract
In order to determine the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to build ten new dwellings, car parking and access road on land to the rear of Six Hills Cottages, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owners to undertake a programme of archaeological evaluation. Five 15m x 1.6m wide trenches were excavated. trench 1 contained a Post-Medieval well and possibly associated post hole. Trench 2 contained an undated, narrow, shallow linear feature, possibly a gully. Trench 3 was blank. Trench 4 was located in a clay pit marked on the 1898 OS map. Two areas of grey clay were visible within the predominently orange clay with flints. These represent the remnants of the material that was being quarried. Trench 5 contained a small, modern rubbish pit.
