Abstract
The war diaries are official records kept by the Battalions during a one month period. They contain the daily orders, correspondence, newsletters, and an intelligence log detailing troop activities, locations, and weather conditions. The war diaries detail the activities and movement of the 1st Battalion from training in Canada and England to active duty on the Western Front and their return to Victoria in January 1946. This diary was kept while at Nijmegen, Niel, Kleve, Bedburg, Kalkar, and Uedem. It has entries about preparing for Operation "Veritable", dealing with an overflow of water from the Rhine River possibly by the enemy to hinder their movements, beginning Operation "Veritable" with a barrage from more than 1000 guns with the Battalion listening to news of how the operation was going as they waited until the evening for their part to begin, moving into Germany and engaging with the enemy, issues with the wireless causing communication problems during the operation, D and A coys being separated and then marooned on the second story of buildings until eventually being rescued by Buffaloes, Cleve having been destroyed much like Caen, sleeping in cellar billets made by the Germans, moving through Bedburg to prepare to attack the enemy strong-point at Calcar and staying in an old insane asylum also occupied by civilian refugees, working with the Reginas and Winnipegs to engage the enemy, advancing through heavy opposition, A Coy outpost being attacked and eliminated during the night with the men presumed to have been taken prisoner, holding a position and fighting off numerous counter-attacks from the enemy with many casualties, the sky clearing and Typhoon planes bombing the Germans, getting a break with reorganizing and burying the dead, learning that their next assignment will not be as intense as the last and that they will be in reserve, friendly fire from planed, and taking up residence in a shoe factory making belts, holsters, boots, etc. from materials left behind by hastily retreating Germans, among other activities and information. Includes appendices covering intelligence logs, battle logs, intelligence summaries, admin notes, strength returns, maps, aerial photos, casualties, traces, defence places, field sketches, Operation "Veritable", report on POWs, personal accounts of battle, "The Rhine is Our Objective", enemy tanks, recommendations for honours and awards, correspondence, orders, "Comforts" correspondence, the Maple Leaf, the West Wall Climber, and field messages.
