Seasonality and Correlation of COVID-19 Cases at a Correctional Facility in Ontario, Canada

Abstract
This report examines the seasonal dynamics and correlation of COVID-19 cases at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Ontario, Canada, from 2020 to 2023. By analyzing both case data and wastewater viral load, the study reveals distinct winter peaks and summer declines in infections. The Spearman rank correlation test shows a weak but significant relationship between active cases and viral load in wastewater. These findings highlight COVID-19 seasonality in closed settings, such as correctional facilities, and demonstrate the value of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) for early outbreak detection.
