Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

From the 5th century BC to the first quarter of the 19th century, iron products were classified into two distinct families: iron (wrought and/or cast) and steel. During more than 2000 years, the classification was founded on the concept of purification by fire. In the 18th century, it appeared the qualification of iron products by “pure iron plus something”: phlogiston and/or plumbago and/or matter of fire. It is only at the beginning of the 19th century that the chemical characterisation of iron products by their carbon content was clearly established. Written documents from ancient Greece and Middle East countries, and from more recent Western Europe are analysed. The transition between the 18th and 19th centuries is described, at the moment of the introduction of chemical language and scientific experimentation in iron and steel industry.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
