Nova Scotia’s commitments to net-zero by 2050 has led to many industries searching for ways to decarbonize. In alignment with this goal the Municipality of Digby is looking at the opportunity to produce green hydrogen locally at their wharf for use in marine vessels. This includes the electricity production from wind energy and hydrogen production from water electrolysis. This paper looks at the energy requirements and cost to do this at the local level. Four scenarios for hydrogen production are mapped out to provide options to Digby. From the scenarios the levelized cost of hydrogen ranges from $5.26-8.01/kg. This cost for hydrogen is enough to drop the 20-year-lifecycle operating cost of a hydrogen-hybrid vessel to be $456,495- 533,830, which is still higher than the operating cost of diesel vessel at $349,040 but is close enough to make bidirectional charging and government subsidies feasible to cover the cost differential.
