Abstract
Le handicap physique ou mental est une composante majeure de la stigmatisation et de la marginalisation de ceux et celles qui en souffrent dans toutes les cultures. Ceci dit, l’Afrique noire est souvent considérée à tort ou à raison comme un monde où l’enfant handicapé est le mieux protégé contre ce type mauvais traitement. Ce travail contraste avec cette croyance et propose un voyage à travers l’Afrique subtropicale sur les représentations collectives et sociales du handicap de l’enfant quelle que soit sa forme. Si plusieurs études ont, certes, montré que le regard de l’Africain sur le handicap de l’enfant évolue avec le temps, l’auteur montre qu’il y a encore du chemin à faire. Comme les perceptions et les représentations interprètent et expliquent la survenue de la maladie et du handicap, l’auteur montre que l’histoire des soins ou l’itinéraire thérapeutique des sujets africains en cas d’événement pathologique reste encore largement influencés par celles-ci.
