Bidirectional Associations between Fatty Pancreas and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Abstract
Objective: Due to shared vicious cycles of insulin resistance between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and fatty pancreas, several studies reported associations between NAFLD and fatty pancreas. The objectives were to not only comprehensively assess the bidirectional association between fatty pancreas and NAFLD but also to evaluate the effects of fatty pancreas on disease severity of NAFLD and vice versa. Methods: We performed systematic search EMBASE and MEDLINE databases from inception to August 2022 for observational studies assessing association between NAFLD and fatty pancreas and effects on disease severity of these two entities. A meta-analysis with random-effects model was conducted to estimate the pooled odds ratio (OR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). The quality of the studies was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.
