Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This watch was a 21st birthday present to my father from his parents. It is inscribed with his initials LJD (Leonard James Daniels) and his birthday 10 August 1944.This though was no moment of celebration. My father had already come of age a year earlier when he volunteered to join the RAF. He trained in Canada and become a bomb aimer/navigator flying in Lancaster bombers with 207 squadron. His flying logs indicate the many bombing raids on Germany that he took part in through 1943 and by 1944 into France. It is remarkable that a school boy should so suddenly be thrust into the midst of war and even more notable that he survived. 50% of Bomber Command's crews never came home. For me, this modest watch represents so much more than a birthday present. It stands for the danger and sacrifice of a whole generation who fought for the benefits of a life of peace and plenty we all take for granted even in today's uncertain times.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
