Photograph of a view of the San Gabriel Mission, showing the ruins of the "Moneyan Institute", Los Angeles, ca.1895. A hexagonal stone entranceway is pictured at center, with its roof crumbling inward, although some of the shingles remain. In the background, a wall with a rectangular opening at its center stands independent of other structures. A dirt path is visible in the foreground along with a bush to the right, a tree to the left and low-growing vegetation. A wire fence marks a boundary in front of the ruins.; Picture file card reads: "Located at the east end of Main Street in Alhambra. This is where the electric car turns south to San Gabriel. Quaintest of all the objects which arrested the eye of the visitor at mission San Gabriel, were the pretentious gateway and its bee-hive piers of the 'Moneyan Institute'. These led to a more ambitious structure in the rear in which a school was kept by the founder. Upon the double gate, inscriptions in Greek, Latin and Hebrew bore witness to the value of learning. Even the cuneiform characters of ancient Nineveh were inwrought as decorations. In one of the remaining piers the harmless old fanatic died, with an image of the Holy Virgin above his head, an articulated skeleton at his feet, and a well-worn copy of some Greek classic within reach of his hand." -- Deane C.
