Abstract
<span style="font-size:12pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri"><span style="font-family:Helvetica">Entre 1914 et 1918, près de 340 témoignages de combattants sont édités en France. Certains connaissent une notoriété immédiate de la part des contemporains ou des critiques. Il faut néanmoins attendre la sortie de la guerre pour voir cette littérature être l’objet d’une tentative de théorisation et de classement. Georges Duhamel est le premier à tenter de définir la littérature de témoignage, peu avant qu’Albert Schinz ne s’intéresse à la valeur esthétique et documentaire des récits de guerre. Proposant à la fin de son ouvrage un classement, Albert Schinz préfigure en cela la partie du travail de Norton Cru qui fit tant polémique à la publication de <i>Témoins </i>en 1929. Dix ans après la fin de la guerre, au moment où la première mise en mémoire du conflit s’effectue dans la société française, Jean Norton Cru publie son étude critique, s’appuyant sur une méthode originale qui mêle à la fois approche scientifique et intervention de son expérience de guerre.</span></span></span>
