Abstract
Bledius mandibularis Erichson, 1840 NOVA SCOTIA: Lunenburg Co.: Backmans Beach, 28.VII.1971, B. Wright, (1, NSMC). Bledius mandibularis is newly recorded in Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada. Its distribution in Atlantic Canada is shown in Fig. 14. In North America there are two populations; a coastal one occurring from southern Texas to Massachusetts, and an inland one found in the central regions of the United States, north to southern Manitoba (Herman 1972). The coastal population is found on bare, moist ground in saline habitats, generally on the leeward side of islands or peninsulas and behind beach dunes (Herman 1972). Backmans Beach is a small island at the tip of the Second Peninsula in Lunenburg County which is linked to the mainland via a barrier beach. It has six variously sized barrier beach-coastal lagoon areas with associated marshlands and sand flats.
