Abstract
Coelotanypus scapularis (Loew) (Fig. 2 F–K) Material examined. CANADA, Manitoba, Lake Winnipeg: South Basin, 6 larvae, 24.vi.–1.viii. 1969; Narrows, 5 larvae, 2.ix. –12.x.1969. The species was never caught in the light traps. Eleven larvae were found in the bottom samples. The head capsule lengths of instars 4–2 are: 595–725, 651 µm (8); 400–440 µm (2); 230 µm (1). Distribution and ecology. The species is known from Québec and New York to Manitoba and Nebraska and south to Florida, Texas and Mexico, Panama Canal Zone and Nicaragua, and possibly from Argentina, Bolivia and Venezuela (Roback 1971: 32, 1974b: 9, 17; Oliver et al. 1990: 8; Epler 2003, 2006; Caldwell 2009; Ashe & O’Connor 2009: 142). It is known from rivers and shallow areas of lakes (Roback 1974: 14).
