Abstract
NON-TECHNICAL SUMMARY This report presents the results of a programme of historic building recording of two detached barns located to the south of the farmhouse at Leycote Farm in the Parish of Hartington Upper Quarter, near Hollinsclough, Derbyshire, situated at National Grid Reference SK 05551 67668. The farm lies in a secluded location, on a steep slope overlooking the Dove Valley which forms the boundary between the counties of Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The barns comprise late 18th to early 19th century additions to an existing farmstead, including a combination cowhouse and hayloft (Barn 1) and combination cowhouse and store (Barn 2). The buildings date to a period when such structures were being built across the region, and do not exhibit any evidence of having been forerunners of their type. Barn 1 retains much of its original fabric, with limited alterations to layout and circulation in the modern era. In comparison, Barn 2 appears to have been much altered through the course of its lifetime, potentially being built on, and incorporating part of, an early 17th century building and then being extended in the 19th century. Architecturally, both barns are of utilitarian design possessing a vernacular that is distinctive of their region and which contributes positively the character of the surrounding landscape. Overall it is considered that the barns are of moderate architectural and historical interest, deriving from their form, materials, age and evidence of function such that they are considered of regional heritage significance.
